InterContinental Bali Resort recently had the honour to host ‘The Spirit of Art – Bali’ by Museum Rudana in collaboration with Indonesia Tattler. This exclusive three day event celebrated the rich diversity of local fine arts with an exhibition of works by some of the most respected painters.
The collection was unveiled on 13 November 2009 in the Puri Kencana Ballroom with a reception to welcome invited art connoisseurs as well as in-house guests. An opening speech was delivered by museum founder, Mr. Nyoman Rudana. General Manager of InterContinental Bali Resort, Mr. Kamal Chaoui, also expressed his delight at the opportunity to host such a prestigious event dedicated to the preservation of local artistry.
The exhibition showcased over 45 paintings inspired by the universal theme of eternal love. There were several works by the Maestro of Balinese Painting, Nyoman Gunarsa, as well as vibrant abstracts by Made Wianta and contemporary masterpieces by Srihadi Soedarsono amongst others. Rising star of the art world, Ida Bagus Indra, also displayed his signature style. Many pieces depicted personal interpretations that reflected the grace of traditional Balinese dance.
However, the highlight of the opening was live painting demonstration by Mr. Herry Soedjarwanto. He took to the stage and painted simultaneously to a performance of the Oleg Tamulilingan dance. He captured the gentle movements of this dance, which recreated the flirting ritual of a pair of bees as they gathered pollen from a field of flowers.
The exhibition continued over the weekend and coincided with a private wedding celebration held by the Rudana family at the Resort. This was a closed affair that saw high-profile members of the art scene and local society come together for an evening of wining and dining.
Sunday evening saw the exhibition conclude with a closing ceremony and a vibrant performance of the Kecak dance from the village of Teges in Klungkung regency. This particular version of the dance is legendary throughout Bali and featured a lead dancer who is currently at the forefront of an international tourism promotion campaign.
Mr. Kamal Chaoui was overwhelmed at the response to this three day exhibition. ‘The Spirit of Art – Bali’ by Museum Rudana was a platform for the wealth of creativity that resonates across the island of Bali. In-house guests were introduced to the concept of fine arts providing yet another experience to enrich their overall quality of stay.
